Smelly toilets, substandard food, overflowing sink, and unkempt premises and rooms greeted Mandya Taluk Panchayat president Suma Ramachandra when she made an unannounced visit to the backward classes and minorities hostel for girls at Keregodu village in Mandya taluk.

Ms. Ramachandra and her team visited the hostel late on Tuesday to check the facilities provided to students.

The taluk panchayat chief, who interacted with hostel residents, was annoyed at the poor living conditions there. She told The Hindu that the quality of food served to residents was not good. There was the risk of waterborne diseases or food poisoning, she said.

She assured the girls that she would look into getting them better facilities and directed the authorities to keep the premises clean. She asked them to provide carpets, buckets and other necessary items for the girls.
