Two senior judges of the Karnataka High Court, H.N. Nagamohan Das and L. Narayanaswamy, have taken exception to the failure of the State government to provide basic amenities at the Government Degree College here.
The two judges visited the college on Saturday following reports in the press about the poor facilities at the college. Speaking at a function here after visiting every classroom in the college, Mr. Nagamohan Das and Mr. Narayanaswamy expressed shock and disgust at the poor state of the building and refused to light the lamp at the function, stating that they were unhappy with the failure of the government to maintain the building. The judges expressed shock over a message on a notice-board in one of the abandoned classrooms stating that students should beware of snakes and scorpions in the classroom.
Mr. Narayanaswamy requested Mr. Das to direct the Principal Secretary, Education, to ensure that the college buildings were maintained properly.
The judge also directed the District and Sessions Judge to issue notice to the officials who were responsible for writing the message on the notice-board and for lack of maintenance of the college building. Mr. Narayanaswamy said the academic future of students in the college would be in jeopardy if they had to study in such a building. The judges promised the students assembled at the function that all their problems would be solved within a short period and advised them to file a complaint before the District Legal Services Authority to enable it to issue notice to officials to appear before the authority.
