Gulbarga: The dream of people of Gulbarga for a swimming pool will become a reality on March 1 when the Rs. 3.25-crore modern swimming pool of international standards at the Chandrasekhar Patil Stadium complex will be thrown open for the general public.

The swimming pool was the dream child of the then Deputy Commissioner Anjum Parvez who was instrumental in taking the initiative in 2003-04. Then, a children’s swimming pool, a racing swimming pool and a diving pool was planned to be built at a cost of Rs. 1.37 crore.

The proposal was sent to the Union Government seeking assistance for taking up the construction of the swimming pool. The Union Government agreed to provide Rs. 60 lakh and said the remaining amount should be borne by the State Government. A sum of Rs. 30 lakh was given as advance by the Union Government with the promise that the remaining Rs. 30 lakh would be released after the State Government submits the completion report of the swimming pool.

Although the State Government did not immediately release any money for the construction of the swimming pool, the District Adminstration persuaded the Gulbarga Development Authority, Gulbarga City Corporation, the cement companies to contribute for the construction the swimming pool and thus the construction began.

The 50x21 meter eight-lane racing pool with a depth of 1.20 metre at one end and 1.80 metre at the other end has been constructed as per international standards and is suitable for conducting competitions.
