All candidates withdrew their papers, leaving none in fray

Tidigol Gram Panchayat has 26 seats and sarpanches call the shots

In Udbal (U) Gram Panchayat of Sindhanur taluk, all members were elected unopposed

Raichur: Kanihal village in Tidigol Gram Panchayat in Sindhanur taluk is the only one in Raichur district where there are no candidates for the upcoming elections. This happened following the withdrawal of nomination papers filed by all the contestants. The State Election Commission has to conduct the election process once again to fill the lone vacant post.

The Tidigol Gram Panchayat has 26 seats and the sarpanches (village heads) play a major role in electing members unopposed. Candidates in 25 of them have already been elected unopposed. In Kanihal village, all three candidates , expressing loyalty to their village heads, withdrew from the fray without realising that one should remain in the contest to get elected unopposed.

Mahantagouda, one of the village heads, had directed two candidates to withdraw their papers to pave the way for the third one to get elected unopposed. But all three withdrew their papers without understanding the logic of the game.

On the other hand, the Udbal (U) Gram Panchayat in Sindhanur taluk is the only body in Raichur district where candidates were elected — all unopposed. The gram panchayat, comprising Udbal (U), Chickadabur, Kyatanahatti and Hullur, has 17 seats. However, though many candidates filed their nominations, only 17 remained in the fray after withdrawal of papers by others.

According to official sources, of 3,276 seats in 164 gram panchayats in all five taluks in the district, 398 candidates have been declared elected unopposed. Elections will be held for the remaining 2,877.
