Groups clash over pathway through park
Udupi: The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse two groups including some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders at "Bala Vana" park at Kota in Udupi district on Monday.
Reports said that there was a controversy over a pathway through the "Bala Vana" park. While one group wanted a path through the park, another opposed it. Brahmavar MLA K. Jayaprakash Hegde had promised to solve the matter peacefully.
But after the victory rally of the BJP on Monday, BJP MLAs Lalaji Mendan, Sunil Kumar, Halady Srinivas Shetty, BJP MLC, V.S. Acharya and Vice-President of State unit of BJP, A.G. Kodgi and their supporters went to the park to register their protest. In the melee that followed, a flag pole at the park was uprooted and a bus stand was damaged. The police resorted to lathicharge to control the two groups.
Later addressing presspersons at Kundapur in Udupi district, the former MP Vinaykumar Sorake said that the episode was unfortunate.
Assistant Commissioner Madan G. Naik told The Hindu that BJP leaders were sitting on a dharna at the park after their victory procession till 2.30 p.m. The melee took place after that. The situation is now under control, Mr. Naik said.
