IEDs were kept in lunch boxes

Police, suspected naxalites exchange fire

CHIKMAGALUR: Suspected naxalites exploded two IEDs when a police party comprising Anti Naxal Force and KSRP personnel, which was conducting combing operations approached Mathuvalli about 12 km from Sringeri on Tuesday.

According to sources, Tharesh and Jadav, police constables, were injured in the attack and have been admitted to the hospital in Manipal. They are said to be out of danger.

Sources said the perpetrators hid behind a house in the village and exploded the devices kept in lunch boxes when the police party approached at about 10.30 a.m.

The naxalites and the police are said to have exchanged fire. A rifle, a detonator and two more IEDs were recovered from the spot.

H.N. Nagaraj, Superintendent of Police, visited the spot.

Combing operations have been intensified in naxal-affected areas of Udupi district.

Additional Superintendent of Police Kashinath Talkeri told The Hindu that although combing operations were carried out daily, after the incident near Sringeri they had been intensified in naxal affected areas coming under Shankaranarayana, Kollur, Hebri and Karkala Rural police stations in the Udupi district.
