The police resorted to a mild lathi-charge to disperse activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) who were ransacking the office of the principal of a school in the Cantonment area here on Friday.

A police constable and a few protestors were injured in the incident. Cowl Bazaar police have arrested nine ABVP activists, including Adaviswamy and Prashant, according to Murugannavar, Deputy Superintendent of Police (City).

Bandh call

The ABVP had called for a school and college bandh here on Friday in protest against the alleged harassment of students at a leading private residential school, where Krishnamurthy (17), a first PU student, recently committed suicide. It had been reported that the boy committed suicide because of the harassment by the hostel warden. The bandh was also to seek action against some educational institutions, which were allegedly running illegal schools, and a few Education Department personnel for not initiating action against such institutions.

The ABVP activists were trying to get the schools closed, forcibly. However, a few schools in the city functioned normally.

The ABVP activists said the lathi-charge was unprovoked.
