MANGALORE: The local unit of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has alleged that on March 24 under-trials inside the Mangalore sub-jail were assaulted. However, the organisation did not specify who the assailants were.

The purported victims were in judicial custody for their alleged involvement in the violence that took place at Kaup of Udupi district on March 15. Superintendent of the jail V. Seshmurthy denied the charges and said that he and other jail authorities had only “admonished” a few inmates. On March 24 these inmates had indulged in obscene behaviour with the residents of a nearby residential building.
