MANGALORE: Sullia police investigating the murder of a housewife, Rekha alias Jayashree (25), at Dodderi in Ajjavara village of Sullia taluk, arrested Monappa Naik, also a resident of the village, on Wednesday. Rekha was assaulted with a wooden stick at her house on Saturday.

Police said Monappa was a friend of Vittal Naik, the victim’s husband. Monappa reportedly attacked Rekha, who refused his overtures and threatened to inform her husband. Gold ornaments worth Rs. 32,000 were recovered from the accused.

He has been remanded in judicial custody.


Two persons on Tuesday died of injuries sustained in separate road accidents. Raghu Poojary (70), a resident of Tenka Yermal in Udupi district, was grievously injured in a road accident on May 18 at Talipady village in Mulki police station limits. A case has been registered at Mulki Police Station.

Dejappa who was travelling in an autorickshaw was injuries when it overturned at Denjodi Gardadi village in Belthangady taluk on August 18. A case has been registered at Belthangady Police Station and investigation is on.


Bharathi (20), a resident of Dembale in Bajathur village of Puttur taluk, was killed when a lorry ran over her on National Highway 48 at Valalu in Uppinangady police station limits on Wednesday. Bharathi, who sustained grievous injuries, died on the spot.

The lorry driver drove away without stopping. The police are investigating.


The Uppinangady police, on credible information, raided a place at Renjala Bajathur village in Puttur taluk and seized wooden logs which were illegally stored there. Police arrested Vishwanath Gowda, a resident of the village in this connection.

A case has been registered at Uppinangady Police Station.

The value of the seized material has been estimated at Rs. 50,000.
