CHIKMAGALUR: Members of the Dalit Sangarsha Samiti staged a demonstration in front of the district offices here on Saturday seeking resumption of mining in Kudremukh to enable thousands of daily wage workers to earn a livelihood.

In a memorandum presented to Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur district, they blamed the State Government and the Centre for not making alternative arrangements for workers in spite of being aware that mining would stop by the end of December.

It is wrong on the part of governments elected by the people to shift the blame to the court of law. Pointing out that the ecology of the Western Ghats cannot be saved by stopping mining in Kudremukh, they observed that providing employment to poor workers was equally important.
