Residents of Mayakonda on Saturday took out a procession in protest against the government not making it a separate taluk.

People burnt tyres on the Mayakonda main road and staged demonstrations.

Led by M.S.K. Shastry, Nagarajappa, K.P. Mariyachar, N.S. Srinivas and M.G. Gopal, the residents criticised Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar for not fulfilling their long-pending demand.

Mr. Shastry said that Mayakonda had a large population, a prominent criterion for declaring it a taluk headquarters.

Mr. Shettar had also promised to make Mayakonda a taluk.

As the agitators forcibly closed down some schools and colleges, tension prevailed in the town.

Mr. Shastry said that the people of Mayakonda would launch an indefinite agitation from February 11 if their demand was not met.
