The gram panchayat has conveyed its misgivings to BMP

  • Residents say Chandapura has potential to become a satellite town
  • High Court had directed shifting of slaughterhouses out of the city

Bangalore: Chandapura off Hosur Road has the potential to become a satellite town, according to its residents. But the small town may face problems if the modern, hygienic slaughterhouse planned there by the Government takes shape, they say.

The Chandapura Gram Panchayat is known to have expressed its misgivings to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike; the latter has been asked by Karnataka High Court to shift slaughterhouses that are now in city limits.

The State Government has a proposal to shift the slaughterhouses now located on Tannery Road (one of the city's oldest), Yeshwanthpur and K.R. Market to a location near Chandapura in Anekal taluk.

The residents of the area and those allocated houses in Suryanagar Layout being developed nearby by the Karnataka Housing Board have opposed the slaughterhouses.

The butcher shops in Bangalore are against the shift, as meat products would have to be transported from almost 40 km away. This would hike their overheads and in the absence of refrigerated trucks it may be difficult to guarantee the freshness of the meat, they say.

    `Not practical'

According to the Meat Sellers' Association, the alternative will be for consumers to travel well outside the city for their requirements and this was not practical.

The State Government has taken note of these considerations and has instead suggested modernisation of the Tannery Road slaughterhouse.

A proposal made to the Union Government in 2002 estimated the cost of modernisation at Rs. 4.65 crore; there will be cost escalation if the Government now goes ahead with the plan. The same year, the Karnataka High Court directed the Government to shift all slaughterhouses located within BMP limits; the deadline then stipulated ended two years ago.

Groups of residents of the areas where slaughterhouses are now located filed a contempt petition because the order was not complied with. It was as a follow-up that the modern abattoir was planned to be located near Chandapura.

Because of its proximity to Electronics City and the industrial area of Bommasandra, Chandapura is considered to have the potential to be developed as a satellite township, with the KHB layout expected to encourage private developers as well to look seriously at this area. But the abattoir plan may put them off.
