The teachings and views of Bhakta Kanakadasa of the 16th century are more relevant today than ever before considering the societal divide on the basis of caste, religion, colour and economic status, said Suresh C. Angadi, MP.

He was speaking after inaugurating a function organised to celebrate Kanakadasa Jayanti celebrations by the district administration and the Department of Kannada and Culture here on Monday.

Mr. Angadi said the legendary saint, philosopher and a great poet was known for having voiced his protest against the social ills based on religion and caste. Inequality based on caste and class considerations still persists though we call the present age as the age of science and technology. No wonder Kanakadasa's philosophy is relevant today than ever before.

He hoped the development works taken up at Kaginale through the Kaginale Development Authority would go a long way in propagating the message of the legendary saint and in addressing issues such as caste-based discrimination.

Delivering a lecture on the occasion, Syndicate member of the Rani Channamma University Siddanna Utnal said the poems of Kanakadasa were as fresh in the minds of the people now as they were in the 16th century because of philosophical essence that is very close to the lives of the common man.

Karnataka State Forest Industries Corporation Chairman Shankargouda Patil spoke.

Belgaum zilla panchayat president Eranna Kadadi, Mayor of the Belgaum City Corporation Manda Balekundri, Deputy Mayor Renu Killekar, Kuruba community leaders Anand Appugol and S.F. Pujer, Deputy Commissioner Ekroop Kaur, zilla panchayat CEO Ajay Nagabhushan M.N., and Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil were present.
