The Bidar Zilla Panchayat has decided to write to the State government seeking permission to supervise works taken up by the gram panchayats.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the members urged the Chief Executive Officer, V. Geetanjali, to seek a clarification from the government on whether ZP members were barred from inspecting the quality of works taken up by the gram panchayats.

They said they were only concerned about the quality of works and did not mean to interfere in the affairs of the gram panchayats.

Ms. Geetanjali said according to the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Act, the gram panchayats, taluk panchayats and zilla panchayats had independent duties and funding patterns. However, the members were not convinced with this and demanded a letter from the State government seeking clarification.

The members criticised the Deputy Chief Minister, K.S. Eshwarappa, for directing officials to cancel a resolution which was passed in an earlier meeting which said funds would be released to gram panchayats only after ZP members inspected the works. Deepika Sachin Rathod, zilla panchayat president, Latha Shantkumar, vice-president, and Veeranna Patil, Mahantayya Teertha, Shailendra Beldale and Kushal Patil, members, were present.
