MANGALORE: The police here have issued a warning about the presence of an inter-State gang of thieves who are adept at diverting people’s attention and stealing cash, jewellery and other valuables.
The gang, according to a press release from Vinay A. Gaonkar, Police Inspector, Mangalore North (Bunder) police station, operates mainly near banks, jewellery shops and markets. Explaining the modus operandi, he said the gang members splash dirt on people, and when the targeted victim keeps his or her bag on the ground to clean the dirt off their clothes, the thieves escape with the bag.
The gang also diverts the attention of people carrying cash in four-wheelers or other vehicles by scattering currency notes on the ground. When they start picking up the notes, one of the gang members steals the cash bag from the vehicle.
