Shamanur Shivashankarappa, Congress leader, who won from the Davangere South Assembly segment, said that it was the prerogative of the party high command to select an appropriate candidate for the chief ministerial post. He, however, added that he too was one of the contenders for the post.

Mr. Shivashankarappa said people had punished the Bharatiya Janata Party for its poor governance. He promised that the Congress would give effective governance in the State. He promised to develop Davangere in the next five years.

M.P. Ravindra, son of the former Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash, who won from Harapanahalli constituency, said that hard work and to an extent the “sympathy factor” had worked for him.

H.S. Shivashankar, JD(S) candidate, said that people of Harihar had taught B.P. Harish a lesson by pushing him to the third place.

Mr. Shivashankar added that people would only choose those candidates who would work for the constituency’s development.
