Basava Mantapa leader Mathe Mahadevi has claimed that many people belonging to the Lingayat community were not allowed to mention their religion as ‘Lingayat' by census enumerators.

Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, she said that although there was good response among members of the community to her call to specify their religion as ‘Lingayat' instead of ‘Hindu', there was confusion among enumerators in this regard. The matter had been brought to the notice of the Director-General of Census, she said.

Reiterating her demand for the status of independent religion to ‘Lingayat dharma', she said the move would help rectify ‘injustice' meted out to socially and economically backward sections among the Lingayats, who were denied the benefits of government schemes.

A memorandum had been sent to the Government in this regard, she said.

Move will help members get benefits, says community leader
