A new culture has to be established in the country that promotes brotherhood, equality and liberty, which are enshrined in the Constitution, Prakash Y. Ambedkar, grandson of B.R. Ambedkar, said here on Monday.
He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a three-day national seminar on ‘Dalit development and inclusive growth: issues and prospects’. It was organised by the B.R. Ambedkar Research and Extension Centre, University of Mysore. People must inculcate “fellow-feeling”, without which brotherhood could not be developed. The lack of it could lead to social problems and hinder progress of the nation, he said.
Harping on the importance of education, he stated that the purpose of good education was to make one decisive. Being indecisive was tantamount to crime against oneself and humanity, he added. Mr. Ambedkar rued the fact that the nation lacked strong leadership in the last decade, and said he did not foresee anyone emerging as a true leader of the country in the next 20 years. The last true leader the nation saw was Atal Bihari Vajpayee, according to him.
Uncontrolled population could lead to depletion of natural resources and meagre natural resources could become a bone of contention between the State and the people, leading to anarchy, he said. “Would India go the erstwhile USSR way and break up into independent nations,” he wondered.
Stating that democracy has been undermined in the country, Mr. Ambedkar added that democracy would not address all questions. It was only an assurance for participation of people and therefore would have to stay.
He recalled Babasaheb Ambedkar’s words that every generation was a “new nation and it had its own ethos”. A new cultural value system ought to be developed, lest it could lead to revival of casteist system. Changes, however, were taking place as the concept of religion was now being questioned by many, Mr. Ambedkar said. Citing economy as the main reason for a country to resort to “invasion” of another country, he said the idea of the world opting for one economic regime had bee born just.
