Wrong notions about mental diseases should be dispelled: Raghavendra

SHIMOGA: Shimoga MP B.Y. Raghavendra said here on Thursday that bringing mentally-challenged persons into the mainstream was a challenging task.

Speaking after inaugurating “Anveshana-2009”, a State-level convention of rehabilitation centres of the mentally-challenged, organised by the Manasadhara Trust, he said that there was a need for people to cooperate in bringing the disabled into the mainstream.

Myths

Mr. Raghavendra said that there were many wrong notions in society about mental diseases, which should be shunned by the public.

He said that the Government was providing various facilities in the education and the health sectors to build a healthy society, and various organisations should join their hands in this important matter.

Later, Mr. Raghavendra, Director of Jana Shikshana Samsthan S.Y. Arunadevi and M. Srinivas of ‘Spandana’ Centre for Rehabilitation, Bangalore, were felicitated on the occasion.

Chairman of the Manasadhara Trust K.A. Ashok Pai presided over the function. Preeti Pai Shanbhag welcomed the gathering.

About 150 representatives and residents of eight rehabilitation centres from various places in the State participated in the convention.
