With the Assembly elections scheduled for May 5, the Police Commissioner has asked owners of licensed firearms to deposit their weapons in their respective jurisdictional police stations. In a press release, Police Commissioner B.G. Jyothi Prakash Mirji said that possession of firearms during the election process, which is on till May 11, is illegal.

However, officials said that communities who are traditionally allowed to keep them are exempt.
