DAVANGERE: A decision has been taken to set up a ‘Sarva Dharma Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike' to maintain peace in the city .

At a meeting held here on Thursday to discuss ways to maintain peace in the city, K. Amaranarayana, Deputy Commissioner, proposed the establishment of such a forum, comprising leaders of various communities and people from all castes and religions.

He said that people of any caste or community could register protests democratically if they were hurt by any article in newspapers or journals.

He said it was improper to destroy private and public property and added that the protest, which turned violent, against an article in a Kannada daily recently could have been staged peacefully.

The aggrieved people could have demanded an apology from the newspaper. Mr. Amaranarayana said people should practise Gandhian philosophy and never resort to violence.

Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil called upon the people not to give credence to rumours and instead register their protests peacefully.

Earlier, leaders of one community reacted sharply to the way in which another community had treated their members.
