BJP State president Prahlad Joshi has alleged that the Centre was meting out injustice to Karnataka in releasing rice and wheat under the Public Distribution System (PDS) ever since the elections to the Assembly were announced.

Mr. Joshi said on Wednesday that the Union Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies had to supply 29,000 tonnes of rice and 11,000 tonnes of wheat for distribution under PDS to eligible families. However, the Union government had not released the foodgrains even after repeated pleas. It was an attempt to tarnish the image of the BJP government in the State during elections, he alleged.

He said that the Union government’s decision was in violation of the election model code of conduct and the BJP had written to the Election Commission of India and the Union Ministry of Food and Civil Supplies about this.

He said that the State had 99 lakh families eligible for supply of essential commodities under PDS but the Union government had recognised 32 lakh families and was supplying foodgrains accordingly. The State government was catering to the needs of 67 lakh families, he added.
