Bangalore: Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in the Karnataka Legislative Council H.K. Patil has urged Governor Rameshwar Thakur to release adequate funds to provide assistance to the victims of recent rain in various parts of the State.

In a letter addressed to the Governor here, Mr Patil said the heavy rain which lashed the northern districts between March 21 and March 24 resulted in heavy losses to the people of the area. In the Bombay-Karnatak area, standing crops of chilli, groundnut and other crops have been washed away. Incidents of house collapse have rendered people homeless. The total losses in Gadag and Dharwad districts has been estimated at Rs 100 crore.

Mr. Patil said the heavy rain had resulted in the Malaprabha overflowing and the submergence of several villages.

“The people of vast areas downstream of the river are in acute distress. They are in urgent need of help. Makeshift accommodation has to be ,” he said.
