Madikeri: Patients who came to the District Hospital had to return without getting medical care as doctors in the Government hospitals in Kodagu were on strike for the second day on Tuesday. The government doctors are demanding regularisation of services of doctors working on contract basis. Their other demand is that their salaries should be enhanced to be on par with those of faculty working in government medical colleges.

District Surgeon Ajith Kumar said: “We will handle emergency cases only today (Tuesday) as per the instructions from the Karnataka State Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA).”

A meeting of the State office-bearers of the association and the State Government officials was held in Bangalore on Monday. But there was no positive outcome.

The Government directed the District Health Officers to utilise the services of private doctors to meet emergencies. It did seem to have worked in Kodagu since Monday.
