The Station House Officer of every police station in the city will be present at his desk between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on every Sunday to verify passport applications from now on.

The new system has been brought about through an order passed by Police Commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji. A copy of the order was released to the press on Saturday.

Applicants can visit the police station under whose jurisdiction their addresses fall on Sundays to check the status of their police verification of their passport applications.

It may be mentioned here that Mr. Mirji had recently stated that they had chosen a Sunday for the purpose as it was a holiday for the public.

With the number of passport applications increasing, causing a corresponding increase in the police verification process, the city police has launched a special drive to clear the pending applications.

Between May 16 and 21, the police had received 3,599 passport clearance applications and had cleared 2,838 applications.
