A mob, claiming to be supporters of Housing Minister V. Somanna, allegedly barged into and ransacked the office of Kannada news channel Suvarna News 24x7 late on Thursday after the channel aired a report on a spat between Mr. Somanna and Excise Minister M.P. Renukacharya. Mr. Somanna was part of the mob.

The report said Mr. Somanna and Mr. Renukacharya got into a scuffle at the residence of Minister for Large- and Medium-scale Industries Murugesh Nirani on Wednesday . Mr. Somanna went to the channel office the next day to refute these allegations, when the situation turned violent. Later, appearing in an interview on the same channel, Mr. Somanna expressed regret for the actions of “some of his supporters”.

He said “only seven or eight supporters of his were part of the crowd” and that he had gone to the studio to clarify his point of view.

At least eight Suvarna News 24x7 reporters have reportedly sustained minor injuries.

It took two police platoons around an hour to restore normality.
