`Government must not interfere in financial matters of panchayats'

    UDUPI: Chairman of the Third State Finance Commission A.G. Kodgi said on Thursday that the Government should not interfere in the financial and other matters of Panchayati Raj institutions.

    He was addressing the members of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat here.

    Mr. Kodgi said Panchayati Raj institutions were vested with powers. It was up to these bodies to reduce bureaucratic interference in their functioning. The decision of the zilla panchayat regarding the implementation of works for which funds were released as per the recommendations of the 12th Finance Commission was final.

    The Third State Finance Commission had decided to identify poor families. A list of such families would be sent to the panchayats in November.

    MLA K. Raghupati Bhat, president of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat Shyamala Sudhakar, vice-president P. Rajaram, leader of the Opposition in the zilla panchayat Kota Srinivasa Poojary and leader of the Opposition in Udupi Taluk Panchayat Katapady Shankar Poojary were present.
