BELLARY: The president, vice-president and members of the Bellary Taluk Panchayat, here on Monday staged a token dharna in front of the taluk panchayat office here to protest against withdrawal of all powers in the name of decentralisation.

In response to the bandh, members of the taluk panchayat, led by their president Mallikarjun Reddy, locked the main gates of the office demanding all powers that existed prior to the Belur Declaration.

According to them, almost all the powers have been transferred to the gram panchayat. They also demanded that the powers to allot houses under Ashraya be vested with them, which is now handed over to the grama panchayats besides establishing an engineering division.

In view of the dharna, the office functioned with minimum staff.
