Mahanta Shivacharya Mahaswami of the Panchamasali Math, who passed away on Monday, was laid to rest with State honours on the premises of the math near Harihar on Tuesday.
Murugesh Nirani, Minister for Industries, and heads of more than 40 maths, including Shivamurthy Shivacharya of the Sirigere Math and Shivamurthy Sharana of the Murugarajendra Math in Chitradurga, were present. .
Last respects
A large number of people from across the State paid their last respects.
The police found it difficult to control traffic on the Harihar-Shimoga road, near Hanagawadi.
Mahanta Swami was the senior seer of the Panchamasali Samaj, a prominent sub-sect of the Veerashaiva community with a population of over 90 lakh in the State.
The math was established in 2008. Mahanta Swami was a Sanskrit scholar and postgraduate in philosophy from Banaras Hindu University.
