Raichur: In the last three days, the Government has opened paddy procurement centres in Raichur, Sindhanur and Manvi in the district and has announced a minimum support price (MSP) ranging between Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 1,030 for a quintal, depending on the quality of paddy.

But so far no centre has started the procuring process. A lengthy procedure of verifying the land records and grading the samples submitted by farmers is said to be the reason for the delay.

In fact, the establishment of paddy procurement centres has helped improve the price of the commodity in the open market.

The price, which was between Rs. 850 and Rs. 900 a quintal in the open market, has now touched a minimum price of Rs. 950 per quintal. However, the delay in procuring the commodity has disappointed farmers.

According to sources, the arrivals of paddy commenced last month and will continue till the end of this month. With average arrivals of about 5,000 quintals of paddy, the price on the commodity was between Rs. 870 and Rs. 950 a quintal depending on the quality.

But after the establishment of the paddy procurement centres, the price of the commodity has jumped by Rs. 50 a quintal.
