Bijapur: Deputy Commissioner R. Shantaraju has said that 6,51,610 children in the age group of six to 15 will be administered vaccine against brain fever from June 9 to 21 in the five taluks of Bijapur district.

Mr. Shantaraju told presspersons here on Friday that awareness programmes would be conducted in all schools, villages and all municipal wards in the city as part of the vaccination drive.

A total of 1,07,277 children in Basavan Bagewadi, 1,16,810 children in Bijapur rural, 94,719 children in Bijapur city, 1,24,595 children in Indi, 95,540 children in Muddebihal and 1,13,678 children in Sindagi are expected to be administered the vaccine.

A total of 216 teams have been formed to administer the vaccine and 46 people have been deputed as supervisors for the drive.

He clarified that the vaccine did not have any side effects, appealed to parents to ensure that their children were administered the vaccine.

Nearly 18 lakh children had been administered the vaccine in Bellary, Kolar and Raichur districts, he added.

In 2005-06, 132 cases of brain fever were reported in the State and only three cases have been reported so far this year, according to Mr. Shantaraju.
