‘Other upright officials have also been shunted out'

The Government's sudden move to transfer Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Siddaiah from the post has invited the ire of the Opposition parties in the BBMP council.

On Monday, M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda, a 1986 batch IAS officer, took charge as the 56 {+t} {+h} Commissioner of the civic authority.

Opposition Leader M. Udayshankar told presspersons that the Congress opposed the transfer, which, he said, was engineered by BJP MLAs and councillors.

“It is unfortunate that a senior, upright IAS officer, belonging to the Scheduled Castes and with several years of service, has been treated like this,” he said.

Janata Dal (S) Floor Leader Padmanabha Reddy alleged that the transfer was effected to scuttle the investigation of the multi-crore scam in the Malleswaram, Rajarajeshwarinagar and Gandhinagar divisions.

“The Government is following the example it has set earlier. Officials who were looking into the land denotification and mining scams in the State have received similar treatment,” he said. Meanwhile, Ruling Party Leader B.R. Nanjundappa, toeing the party line, said, “We cannot question the Government's decision. Mr. Siddaiah had sought the transfer himself on health grounds.”

Refusing to comment on whether there was political pressure behind the transfer, he only stated that the BJP was serious about bringing the guilty to book.

“However, we cannot conclude that the scam has happened for sure,” Mr. Nanjundappa said.
