MANGALORE: Bantwal Police arrested Yakub (28) of Badria Nagar, Mallur village in Mangalore taluk, in connection with the murder of Puttumonu (45), Ullaibettu gram panchayat member. A press release from B. Dayananda, Superintendent of Police, here on Monday said that the accused was caught in Ira village of Bantwal taluk.

The accused had reportedly taken shelter in a relative's house and was arrested based on the information given by Sahul Hamid (23) of Mallur village in Mangalore taluk. Sahul was caught in Pavoor on July 25. The release said that the accused was a close friend of the victim.

Sahul had lured the victim in the pretext of arriving at a settlement in a dispute and took him on a motorcycle to Kudthapadpu of Bantwal taluk where some others were waiting.

There the accused allegedly hacked him to death.

Police have seized the motorcycle.
