According to a survey, 30 to 35 per cent of the population consumes tobacco in some form or the other leading to over 3,500 deaths every year, said oncologist Jagadish Tubchi.

He said, on Tuesday, there was a 20 to 40 per cent risk of cancer among people consuming tobacco. Welcoming the ban on gutka in the State, Dr. Tubchi said Sampige Super Speciality Clinic, Hubli, was working towards creating awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco consumption and helping tobacco victims.

He urged the State government to take steps to ensure that the ban on gutka was enforced vigorously.
