Project for weavers of the district on the anvil
GULBARGA: Secretary of Hyderabad Karnataka Development Board Shalini Rajneesh Goel on Tuesday asked officials to come up with a plan for the district aimed at making Gulbarga district on a par with the State’s developed districts by 2010.
Chairing a meeting here, she asked the officials to ensure that the plan included basic amenities and human resource development. She asked them to prepare the plan within 15 days with the involvement of non-governmental organisations in the process.
To mitigate drinking water problems in areas facing water scarcity, she asked the officials to revive tanks, increase green cover, start watershed activities and take steps to replenish the water-table.
Stressing the role of education in human resource development, Ms. Goel said priority should be given to education, health and skill development among individuals. To generate income for families, suitable training should be given to people on marketing skills development through District Industries Centre and the lead bank.
Ms. Goel said a project should be prepared for the welfare of weavers, and efforts should be made to revive the profession. Waste generated in Gulbarga city and rural areas could be used in organic farming. Besides, it would help keep the surroundings clean, she said.
She said that to generate employment in the district, training in business process outsourcing (BPO) and industries should be started. Starting BPO centres and industrial units would help stop migration of educated youth to cities.
She asked the officials to start skill development programmes at the hobli level in the district.
Acting chairman of the zilla panchayat Geddappa Gurikar presided over the function. Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health and Education of the zilla panchayat Nagareddy Patil, chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Industry of the zilla panchayat Madhusudan Reddy, and zilla panchayat chief executive officer S. Shekar participated.
