Joshi instructs officials to impose penalty with immediate effect
Expressing displeasure over the inordinate delay in the execution of work on the underground drainage network in the city, Bharatiya Janata Party State president Pralhad Joshi and Deputy Commissioner Sameer Shukla took the officials concerned and the contractor to task here on Friday.
The Deputy Commissioner had convened a review meeting at the request of Mr. Joshi, following complaints over the problems caused to the public.
Representatives of Eagle Infra India Ltd., which bagged the underground drainage contract in Hubli, were at loss for words when Mr. Joshi and Mr. Shukla sought to know the details of the work being carried out.
The officials concerned were also pulled up for not penalising the contractor for exceeding deadlines.
Mr. Joshi said: “This was not the first time that the contractor had been given extra time.” He told the officials to impose penalty with immediate effect.
Purushottam, a representative of the company, said the failure to complete work was because of the delay in getting permits from various government departments.
Mr. Shukla took exception to this and said unless these issues were brought to his notice, it could not be resolved. “Moreover, small technical issues could be sorted out through coordination,” he said. Mr. Shukla said the delay was mainly because the contractor and the officials had failed to adhere to the tender guidelines.
Commissioner of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation Y.S. Patil also took exception to the lack of awareness about the rules among officials.
The meeting concluded with a decision to hold weekly review meetings on the progress of the remaining work.
