MYSORE: Suicide by a staff nurse in Hunsur taluk because of the alleged sexual harassment at workplace led to a protest by members of various women’s organisations in Hunsur on Wednesday.

H.B. Mamata (23) of Arsikere in Hassan district was working as a staff nurse at the Bilikere Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Hunsur taluk. She was allegedly harassed by Medical Officer Harish. Despite several complaints, District Health Officer V. Raju did not initiate action against Dr. Harish. Instead of initiating action against the doctor, the DHO transferred Mamata to the Hanagodu PHC on November 27, it is said. Frustrated by this, Mamata consumed some tablets. She was shifted to the General Hospital in Hunsur, where she died. Deputy Superintendent of Police Muttuswamy Naidu told The Hindu that a case had been registered against Dr. Harish and efforts were on to trace him. He said a note had been recovered from Mamata’s bag, which blamed Dr. Harish for her suicide. The DHO said Dr. Harish was suspended on Monday and an inquiry had been ordered.
