`State Government has not yet released its share of funds'

SHIMOGA: Members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the students' wing of the Congress, staged a rasta roko at the railway level crossing near the railway station here on Thursday protesting against the delay in taking up the construction of the railway over-bridge on the Shimoga-Honnali road.

The also demanded the construction of a railway under-bridge on the Shimoga-Holehonnur road.

The demonstrators said that though the Railways had released Rs. 4 crore for the construction of the over-bridge near the railway station. However, the work could not be taken up immediately as the State Government had not released the funds for it.

They said the Railway Department had been earmarking Rs. 1 crore a year for the proposed project pertaining to the construction of the four railway bridges in the district for the last several years. But no action had being taken by the State Government to release its contribution for this purpose, they said.

They said the delay in taking up the construction of the railway bridges, particularly the one on the Shimoga-Honnali road where the density of traffic had increased greatly, had been causing a lot of inconvenience to motorists as the gates at the level crossing were often closed.

They threatened to intensify the agitation if the construction of the bridges on the Shimoga-Honnali road and the Shimoga-Holehonnur road was not taken up immediately. NSUI district unit president Devendrappa and former councillor Jameela Khanam led the demonstration.
