The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has set new deadlines for the completion of its long-pending projects. Commissioner M.K. Shankarlinge Gowda has promised that March 15 will be the final deadline for the completion of three projects — Prof. C.N.R. Rao Circle underpass, Kadirenahalli underpass and Tagore Circle underpass.

He made the announcement at a press conference held here on Wednesday, where Mayor Sharadamma announced that the BBMP had been awarded a prize for financial sustainability for 2005-06 in implementing reforms, at the national conference of JNNURM in New Delhi.

The Commissioner, during his inspection, reportedly asked the concerned to buck up. “We will inspect the progress on these projects periodically,” he added. About the storm-water drain remodelling project, he said that 40 per cent of the work had been completed, and that the entire project would finish by March 2012.

Speaking about the factors that fetched the palike the award, he said it was the BBMP's GIS-based property tax collection format and the distribution of individual PID numbers. However, there is scope for improvement. “By January 15, all properties will have PID numbers. Those still not covered are those with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). We are talking to the BDA to hand over these layouts to the BBMP,” he said.

On the palike's big loans, he said: “I'm trying for replacement of short-term loans with long-term ones.”
