Vishwa Cinema Adhyayana Kendra (World Cinema Study Centre), a forum founded by filmmaker P.R. Ramadas Naidu, will release Vishwa Cinema (Samagra Adhyayana Male) Maatu Baruva Tanaka (a book on the silent era of cinema) on Saturday. It is a 400-page illustrated volume.

The kendra plans to bring out another four volumes on the development of world cinema. Mr. Naidu says it is his dream to bring out reference works on world cinema for the benefit of students and researchers. Though the books will be published in Kannada, it will later be translated into other languages.

Mr. Naidu worked with Kashinath, actor and director, who set a trend in Kannada cinema. He assisted Mr. Kashinath in Aparichita and Aparoopada Athithigalu . Mr. Naidu made his debut in Amara Madhura Prema . He has directed nine films and bagged Swarna Kamala national award for his directorial venture Hejjegalu , besides getting seven State awards for the films he has made.

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Naidu said that he felt that there was dearth of reference books on world cinema in Kannada. Speaking on Maatu Baruva Tanaka , he said that the volume was a result of 20-year research. “This 12-chapter volume is the result of my 20 years of labour.”

It is his teacher-poet H.S. Venkateshamurthy who encouraged him and cajoled him to complete the work. “It took three years for me to complete the work. I am indebted for the support my teacher, H.S. Venkateshamurthy, extended”, Mr. Naidu said.

According to him, the second volume on the development in world cinema from 1930 to 1950 will be ready by mid-2014.

The work is being translated to Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam languages in the first phase and later it will be translated to Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Assam and Oriya.

On Vishwa Cinema Adhyayana Kendra which is his brainchild, Mr. Naidu said an advisory committee comprising experts in film industry would be formed to make the forum a centre of creative activity.

Maatu Baruva Tanaka will be released July 13 at Yavanika on Nrupatunga Road at 6 pm.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M. Veerappa Moily will release the book.

Minister of State for Kannada and Culture Umashree, filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli, litterateurs H.S. Venkateshamurthy, Kum. Veerabhadrappa, Dr. Siddalingaiah, and president Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce B. Vijayakumar will present.
