‘It is difficult to analyse the greed of public servants'

Corruption not confined to politicians: Hegde

Bangalore: “If the judges are honest what's wrong in publishing their assets and liabilities on the website,” Karnataka Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde said here on Saturday.

Once a corrupt man is perpetually a corrupt man and the corruption is incurable. It is difficult to analyse the greed of pubic servants who have fat salaries, Mr. Hegde, after releasing “Bengaluru Telephone Directory 2009-10”, said. The Bangalore Telecom District (BTD) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has published its main telephone directory after three years. The directory is in four volumes in English and four volumes in Kannada.

“The system is the root-cause for corruption. There was no law pertaining to disclosing the assets and liabilities on websites when I took charge as Lokayukta. Immediately after taking the charge I disclosed my assets on the website. Except a house I have noting on this earth. Even I have not applied for a BDA site,” Mr. Hegde said.

Corruption was not confined to bureaucrats and politicians. It had been spreading in all fields. It could be stopped through changing the attitude, he said.

The Lokayukta lauded the service and efficiency of the BSNL as well as its workforce.

BSNL has about nine lakh landline telephones working in the BTD. The directory in English has 2,576 pages while Kannada volumes have 4,256 pages. Directories have been made available in CD-ROM.

The volumes contain Information Pages, Business and Government listings, residential and rural listings.

Volumes of the Bengaluru Telephone Directory 2009-10 are user friendly. Information Pages have been designed for easy access to information on services offered by the BSNL and telephone numbers of public utilities. Tariff for BSNL services is displayed.

Details about various services and tariffs of BSNL have been published. Shortly BTD will distribute directories to its customers through all “Customer Service Centres” of BSNL. Customers should produce the renewal coupons (coupon available in the old directory – 2006-07) to get the volumes.

The directory will be made available at telephone exchanges, customer service centres and mobile counters. BTD will distribute the copies through mobile vans in various localities in the City and details about this will be published through newspapers, BSNL said. Internet users can search for telephone numbers of subscribers. The directory is also available on the BTD website, www.bangaloretelecom.com.

Chief General Manager of Karnataka Telecom Circle P. Raghavan, BTD Principal General Manager Shubendu Ghosh, General Manager (BSNL- Development) P. Janardhan Rao and former Advocate General B.V. Acharya were present.
