Walk for Diabetes, an awareness drive, was organised on the occasion of World Diabetes Day-2011 here on Friday.
The Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), Mysore, conducted the event to educate people about diabetes and ways to prevent it.
Between 50 and 70 persons climbed the steps of Chamundi Hills to highlight the importance of regular exercise for diabetes management.
Four counters had been set up at different places along the way, and resource persons at the counters explained about diabetes, its symptoms, the importance of blood tests to detect diabetes, its impact on health and complications associated with the disease, and diabetes management.
Doctors participating in the drive said regular exercise from an early age was the best way to keep diabetes away. The health complications from diabetes were many and therefore care should be taken to prevent the disease, they said.District Health Officer H.M. Male Gowda, who was the chief guest, said a healthy lifestyle could prevent diabetes.
The cost of treating diabetes had gone up and it was best way was to take the precautions to keep the disease away, he said. SVYM founder R. Balasubramaniam flagged off the first batch of walkers at 6 a.m., while Dr. Male Gowda flagged off the second batch around 9 a.m.
Before climbing the steps, the walkers, mainly all the students and the volunteers of the drive, marched from JSS College which is on Ooty Road, to the foothills of the Chamundi.
