BANGALORE: The State Government has sought the permission of the Union Government for expansion of two units of 700 MW each at the nuclear power plant at Kaiga in Uttara Kannada district.

Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa, who met Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde in New Delhi on Wednesday, told presspersons here on Thursday that the nuclear plant operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation need to be expanded and the matter had been brought to the notice of the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission.

Mr. Eshwarappa informed the Union Power Minister that necessary infrastructure and inputs were available at the site to facilitate the expansion. “The NPC should be requested to take action and add 1,400 MW at Kaiga immediately,” he said.

During the meeting, Mr. Eshwarappa sought the advice of Mr. Shinde on development of a greenfield 2000 MW nuclear power plant in the State.

Mr. Eshwarappa told the Union Power Minister that “it is our endeavour that Karnataka be a participant in the programme and a Greenfield Nuclear Project of 2,000 MW is sanctioned to our State.”
