The Gulbarga police launched a crackdown on gangs involved in illegal activities and arrested nine persons belonging to two gangs here facing charges of supari killings, extortion, and running gambling dens.

Superintendent of Police N. Sateesh Kumar told presspersons here on Sunday that the police had recovered two country-made pistols, seven live cartridges, lethal weapons and a vehicle from them.

All the arrested are history-sheeters. The leader of one of the gangs, Bombay Sanjay Holkar, is facing murder charge in Andhra Pradesh and a few months ago, was arrested by the Hyderabad police. He is out on bail now.

Mr. Kumar gave the names of the arrested as Satish Reddy, Pradeep Ratan Singh, Rohit Holgatti and Mallu Nimbargi, and Bombay Sathya Holkar, Vishal Navrang, Gowtam Putgi, Vijaykumar Chinchur and Sharanayya Kallayya. He said that the arrested had named one Ravi Bhairamadgi, of Bhairamadgi village in Afzalpur taluk, as the one who supplied the country-made pistols.
