A newlywed suffered serious burns when she attempted to end her life by dousing herself with kerosene igniting it at her home at SRK Garden here on Sunday evening.

The victim, Asma Pasha, is battling for life in Victoria Hospital with 90 per cent burns. Doctors said, “It will be difficult to save Asma”.

Tilaknagar police said that ever since the 20-year-old married Fayaz Pasha, a vulcanising shop owner, three months ago, she was being physically and mentally tortured by him. Things were so bad Asma twice went back to her parents, who persuaded her to return to her husband.

On Sunday evening she could no longer stand it and set herself on fire. Neighbours, on hearing her screams, rushed to her residence and shifted her to Victoria Hospital.

Asma's family alleged that she was being harassed for more dowry and was probably set on fire by the husband.

Depressed husband

Unable to bear the sudden death of his wife, a 34-year-old businessman hanged himself at his home at NAL Layout near Jal Bhavan Layout here on Sunday evening.

The Tilaknagar police said that Kiran Kumar, a small-time transport firm owner, had been depressed after his wife Nirmala died in childbirth a week ago. The baby boy is fine.

Shocked relatives who saw him hanging rushed him to a private hospital on Bannerghatta Road where he died while undergoing treatment.

Murder, suicide

A man allegedly killed his second wife at their home and later ended his life by hanging himself from a tree in Turaga Jakkanahalli village in Anekal taluk on Sunday night.

Anekal police said that Kantappa (54), a habitual drinker, allegedly hit Anasuyamma (30) with an iron rod.

Chains snatched

Two men on a motorcycle allegedly accosted a woman on Reservoir Street here and snatched her two gold chains worth Rs. 3 lakh on Sunday evening.

Basavanagudi police said Premavathi, a native of Coimbatore, had relocated to the city only recently.
