The Senate came into being on April 8, 2007

Belgaum: Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has constituted is third Academic Senate within 24 hours of the notification from the Governor's Secretariat and the Vice-Chancellor's order.

The new Senate has come into being from April 8, 2007, according to VTU notification dated April 18.

Significantly, the constitution of the Senate has taken place at a time when Vice-Chancellor K. Balaveera Reddy is on "extension." His second and last term came to end on March 31, and was advised by the Governor and Chancellor of the VTU to continue till a new Vice-Chancellor was appointed.

Also, three persons have found berth in the 23-member Senate for second time, thanks to the absence of any rule against nominating a sitting member to the body for the second time. The nominations have been made under Section 22 and subsections 1,2,3,5, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 for three years.

R.N. Herkal, principal, Basaveshwar College of Engineering, Bagalkot, was re-nominated under Section 22 (9); V.K. Aatre under Section 22 (10) and K. Shivashankar under Section 22 (11).

That apart, eyebrows were raised on the nomination of two persons under Section 22 (11) whose qualification or profession has not been mentioned against their names. They are Rajendra Pukhraj Khataria of Belgaum and B.N. Thyagaraja of Bangalore. However, later in the evening, the VTU Registrar release the list of members nominated to the Senate wherein it was stated that Mr. Thyagaraja was a retired Engineer-in-Chief, BWSSB, and Mr. Khataria a management expert.
