Shankaranna Matanavar of Shidenur in Byadgi taluk and Geeta Ankaskhani of Akki Alur in Hanagal taluk were elected president and vice-president of the Haveri Zilla Panchayat on Thursday. Both of them belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Regional Commissioner of Belgaum Gangaram Baderia announced the results on Thursday.
In the 32-member zilla panchayat, 27 belong to the BJP and four to the Congress. There is an Independent member too.
Mr. Matanavar filed two nomination papers for the president’s post, while Ms. Ankaskhani filed her papers for the vice-president’s post.
In the absence of other nomination papers, the Regional Commissioner, who was also the Election Officer, declared them elected unopposed.
Shivakumar Udasi, MP; Shivaraj Sajjanar, MLC; Nehru Olekar, Sureshgouda patil and G. Shivanna, MLAs; and H.G. Shrivar, Deputy Commissioner, were present.
Zilla panchayat members Basavaraj Bevinahalli, Lalita Jadhav, Manjula Ambali and Mahadevappa Fakirappa Bagasar stayed away from the process.
