Minister accused of failing to release funds
Several organisations under the banner of the Tipu Sultan Abhimanigala Vedike took out a rally here on Wednesday, demanding the Government to name the Bangaluru International Airport (BIA) after Tipu Sultan.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government recently decided to name the BIA after Kempe Gowda, the founder of Bangalore, and a proposal in this regard was sent to the Union Government.
The Vedike, in a memorandum submitted to Governor H. R. Bharadwaj through the District Administration, said that Tipu was born at Devanahalli, where the BIA is located. Thus, the Vedike said it was apt to name the BIA after Tipu, who was not only a great freedom fighter but also an honest Kannadiga.
On the Government decision to name the BIA after Kempe Gowda, the Vedike said several landmarks in Bangalore, including the city bus stand, had been named after him. But, there is no building that was named after Tipu, they said.
The Vedike alleged that the Minister for Minorities and Waqf, Mumtaz Ali Khan, had failed keep to his promise that he would allocate Rs. 20 crore for various development works in the name of Tipu.
Vedike president Kasim Ali, general secretary Sirajuddin Sultan and Dalit leader M. Jayanna were among those present.
