HUBLI: A music programme by various musicians to mark “Smruti Dina” will be held here on Saturday night in memory of Sangeet Ratna Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan and Pandit Shripati Padigar.
Ten musicians, including senior vocalist Chandrashekhar Puranikmath and flautist Praveen Godkhindi, will pay musical tribute to the late musicians.
Vice-president of Marhoom Abdul Karim Khan Sangeet Seva Samiti Manoj Hangal, disciple of Shripati Padigar Jayateerth Mevundi told presspersons here on Wednesday that Pandit Chandrashekhar Puranikmath, Pandit Chandrakanth Kamat and Mavuli Takalkar would be felicitated on the occasion. The other artistes, who would perform during the nightlong programme, are Aravind Thatte (harmonium), flautist Akash, and vocalists Jayateerth Mevundi, Nagabhushan Hegde, Krishnendra Wadikar, Aparna Kelkar, Rajendra Deshpande and Sanjiv Joshi.
Ustad Abdul Kareem Khan, founder of Kirana Gharana of Hindustani music, was instrumental in popularising Hindustani music in Karnataka.
He founded Arya Sangeeta Vidyalaya in Belgaum to train students in the gurukul method.
Pandit Shripati Padigar, a disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, dedicated his life for music. He organised “Smruti Dina” in memory of Ustad Kareem Khan.
