The United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre calls itself as the Government of the common man but it neglects the people, Basudev Acharya, MP and CPI(M) leader, said here on Thursday.

Addressing the sit-in dharna organised by the people living within the 5-km radius of Kaiga Nuclear Power Station, here, Mr. Acharya said if the Government had fulfilled its the promise on providing rehabilitation, employment, and infrastructure, the people would not have been forced to protest.

Urging the people to continue their protest, he promised to raise the issue on the floor of Parliament. He said he was the vice-chairman of the newly-formed Disaster Management Committee of Parliament and Speaker of Lok Sabha was the committee's chairperson. “It will be easier for me to take up the issue with the Speaker,” he said.

Maruthi Manpade, Karnataka Pranta Raitha Sangha State unit president, said the protest would continue till the Government agreed to shift the 500 families living within 5-km radius of the Kaiga power station to a safe place.

Yamuna Gaonkar, district secretary of CP(I)M, and Shanabhag of CITU spoke.

Mr. Acharya later visited the villages within the 5-km radius of Kaiga power station.
